September 2010 - New crematorium to serve Eastleigh and surrounding areas nears completion.
The long wait for a new crematorium to serve Eastleigh and surrounding areas will soon be over with construction work on the new facility at Bubb Lane, Hedge End due to be completed before the end of the year.
The new crematorium, named Wessex Vale after discussions with local funerals directors and residents, is the result of many years of planning and will provide much needed relief to the facilities at Portchester and Southampton which are amongst the five busiest crematoria in the country.
Wessex Vale will provide a much calmer environment and its rural setting, alongside fields and woods, should offer some comfort to bereaved families.
The crematorium will also provide the very latest facilities to the bereaved and funeral directors. A 24 hour web based booking service will be provided as well as a digital music system and web cam option for broadcasting funerals on the internet. Other online services are being developed and will be an integral part of the crematorium’s website.
More traditional tastes will still be met though with the installation of the latest Viscount organ and people will be encouraged to use local musicians and singers where possible.
The site is currently being landscaped so that the distinctive look of the crematorium, constructed in the native red brick of Hampshire, is screened behind trees, shrubs and lawns. The existing mature woodland also provides a wonderful backdrop and early visitors to the site have been impressed with how the building blends into its natural surroundings.
