Seafield Cemetery & Crematorium, Edinburgh
Seafield Cemetery was opened in 1887 and the Crematorium was added in 1939. Shielded from modern city life by a high red sandstone embankment, entering the peace and quiet of Seafield is like taking a step back in time, with graves still being dug by hand and morning suited staff attending each burial.
While still holding traditional values, Seafield works to modern standards, using state of the art cremators and allowing its hand bound Book of Remembrance to be accessed over the internet. The crematorium chapel, which can seat 120, is a listed building. It retains many original features while carefully blending in modern heating, lighting and access systems. Seafield is the only local crematorium that has an adjoining waiting room to which the service can be relayed by loudspeaker.
The Courtyard is a new addition to the cemetery, and offers “earthless” burial alternatives of mausolea and burial chambers.
